About This Place

Nestled in a cozy corner at 269 Putnam Ave, Cambridge, Alive & Kicking Lobsters serves up an authentic taste of New England’s finest seafood in a delightfully no-frills setting. This beloved seafood restaurant specializes in succulent lobster dishes that captivate both locals and visitors craving a genuine Boston lobster experience just steps from Harvard Square.

The star of the menu is undoubtedly the Two Cooked Lobster with Steamer or Mussels, where fresh, steaming lobster arrives perfectly boiled and paired with buttery, garlicky steamers or mussels. The buttery richness of the lobster meat, combined with the subtle hint of lemon and white wine in the shellfish, create a sensational harmony that bursts with ocean-fresh flavor. For sandwich lovers, the Famous Lobster Sandwich is a must-try: juicy, tender lobster meat piled high on perfectly toasted bread, creating an indulgent bite that leaves you savoring every ocean-kissed morsel.

Other menu highlights include hearty, creamy classics like the Clam Chowder and the Seafood Chowder, both made with real butter and cream for a silky texture that feels like a warm embrace on a chilly day. The Crabmeat Sandwich and bowls of steamed clams and mussels infused with garlic, butter, parsley, and white wine continue to draw fans who appreciate simplicity done impeccably well.

Dining at Alive & Kicking Lobsters is like being invited into a friend’s backyard seafood feast. The informal, picnic table setup fosters a relaxed and approachable atmosphere—picture bright outdoor seating, casual communal tables, and the salty air perfect for savoring fresh catches. As many diners note, the vibe is unpretentious and welcoming, where the focus remains firmly on enjoying fresh, high-quality seafood without fuss.

Customers frequently rave about the freshness and authenticity of the food. Shuhao Liu praises the lobster sandwich for its juicy, tasty lobster meat balanced by perfectly toasted bread, while Ravi Lalla calls it "lobster heaven," highlighting the exceptional bisque and clam chowder made with genuine ingredients rather than artificial thickeners. K Gillen fondly describes it as a "hole-in-the-wall" gem just moments from Harvard Square, recommending customers grab a beer next door to pair with their meal and enjoy the friendly, attentive service.

While the outdoor, informal setup means amenities like lobster crackers and restroom facilities are minimal, the honest, heartwarming experience and quality of the seafood more than compensate. It’s a spot that invites you to roll up your sleeves and relish genuine New England lobster dishes in a casual, spirited ambiance that’s refreshingly sincere and delightfully delicious.

Whether you’re a lobster aficionado or simply want to taste seafood the Boston way, Alive & Kicking Lobsters delivers a memorable, flavor-packed journey that feels as familiar as it is exciting. It’s a celebration of freshness, simplicity, and the unbeatable joy of a perfectly steamed lobster shared with family and friends.

A serendipitous find by searching "lobster near me"! A&K is the BEST! A "hole-in-the-wall" kind of place, right in a driveway, picnic tables, lots of napkins, yet only about 4,000' from Harvard Square. Around the corner from Whole Foods (tip: buy beer there and bring it to A&K; this is not "sneaking it", the folks at A&K gave me this tip)! The food was fresh, hot, and delicious, but the service! Can I give 10 stars!? We initially ordered to-go, then changed our minds. This is an inconvenience for the staff here due to the packaging, etc., but they shined through. They went waaaaay above and beyond to assist and accommodate, finding and providing for us bottle openers, shell-crackers, extra whatever we needed. Please. Do yourself a favor and go to this local-place, give them your business. I wish I could remember the staff members names (it was about July 20, 2025). But thank you for more-than-making our day.

Took the whole crew (hubby + 4 kids) here while vacationing in Boston because, let’s be real—you can’t come to Boston and not eat lobster. This place is no-frills in the best way. Picture picnic tables, casual vibes, and outdoor seating that feels like you’re dining in somebody’s driveway. We loved it. We ordered the lobster special, lobster sandwich, and lobster bisque. Heads up: the lobster special was delicious but not teenager-proof. My two boys ate it and looked at me like I owed them a second dinner. Rookie move. The lobster sandwich was solid—my heart was set on a roll, but this was a satisfying backup. Now let’s talk about that lobster bisque. Listen… this was the best lobster bisque I’ve had in my life. No exaggeration. And I live with a husband who’s a professional-level food snob. He swears everything we pay for he could make better (and cheaper) at home. In 17 years, he’s only admitted three times that a restaurant meal was worth it. This was one of them. Order extra bread and thank me later. What really stood out, though, was the service. The young man who took our order was incredibly kind and knowledgeable—he knew the food and the business inside and out. One of my kids has a mollusk allergy, and he was so intentional about making sure there was no cross-contamination. That’s no small thing at a seafood place. He double-checked utensils and took it seriously, which made me feel seen and safe as a parent. That level of care meant a lot. Bonus points: they have live lobsters on site, and if your kids are curious (like my 11-year-old was), they’ll show them to you. My youngest called it a “learning experience” because she got to see the lobsters, oysters, and what she described as “sea things hanging on the wall.” Her words, not mine. Family consensus: “The food was amazing,” “They have really good lobster bisque,” and “This place is cool.”

A lobster spot near Harvard. We ordered the Shore Dinner (2 steamed lobsters with steamers) for about $45 for here and the lobsters are tiny. No line when we went around noon on Saturday. The lobster was decent but not outstanding compared to other Boston-area lobsters. Outdoor setup is simple—restroom/handwashing is limited and there were no lobster crackers, so it takes some effort to eat. Overall: 3.5/5.

We went to this little restaurant with our friends. The food is delicious. The lobster sandwiches is good although I still have think I like rolls more than sandwich bread. The steamers and mussels are REALLY good. Will I go there again ? Absolutely ! Next time we want to try the steam lobster and I will get more mussels again :)
